Inflaton and spinodal instability

چکیده

Motivated by results in exact renormalization group studies, we consider an inflaton model with non-minimal coupling, leading to a potential which evolves with the curvature scalar of the Universe, in a similar way a coarse grained potential evolves with the energy scale. Starting with a symmetry breaking feature, the evolution of the effective potential mimics a Wilsonian flow in energy, and flattens as the Universe expands, providing an effective description of quantum corrections dressing the system. The resulting scenario describes first a de Sitter phase, where the inflaton potential is static, followed by a preheating period during which the potential becomes flat, quickly enough for the inflaton never to reach the minimum of the bare potential.

Spinodal effect in the natural inflation model

(December 27, 1999) Recently, Cormier and Holman pointed out that fluctuations of an inflaton field φ are significantly enhanced in the model of spinodal inflation with a potential V (φ) for which the second derivative V (φ) changes sign. As an application of this model, we investigate particle production in the natural inflation model with a potential V (φ) = m [1 + cos(φ/f)] by making use of ...

Features in the primordial power spectrum of double D-term inflation

Recently, there has been some interest for building supersymmetric models of double inflation. These models, realistic from a particle physics point of view, predict a broken-scale-invariant power spectrum of primordial cosmological perturbations, that may explain eventual non-trivial features in the present matter power spectrum. In previous works, the primordial spectrum was calculated using ...

False Vacuum Decay after Inflation

Inflation is terminated by a non-equilibrium process which finally leads to a thermal state. We study the onset of this transition in a class of hybrid inflation models. The exponential growth of tachyonic modes leads to decoherence and spinodal decomposition. We compute the decoherence time, the spinodal time, the size of the formed domains and the homogeneous classical fields within a single ...

Spinodal instabilities and super-Planckian excursions in natural inflation.

Models such as Natural Inflation that use pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons as the inflaton are attractive for many reasons. However, they typically require trans-Planckian field excursions ΔΦ>MPl, due to the need for an axion decay constant f>MPl to have both a sufficient number of e-folds and values of ns,r consistent with data. Such excursions would in general require the addition of all other h...

Dynamics of coupled bosonic systems with applications to preheating

Coupled, multifield models of inflation can provide several attractive features unavailable in the case of a single inflaton field. These models have a rich dynamical structure resulting from the interaction of the fields and their associated fluctuations. We present a formalism to study the nonequilibrium dynamics of coupled scalar fields. This formalism solves the problem of renormalizing int...
